Dear Members of Architects for Peace<br />
<br />
Contributions for all renewing members should be paid annually in July. If you haven't contributed with your membership in the last 12 months now is the time to do so.<br />
<br />
The committee notes that in comparison to other organisations our membership contributions are quite modest and have not been raised for several years. Because all our work is done by volunteers, our running cost are kept to a minimum, yet, they add up. Please visit our <a href="http://www.architectsforpeace.org/">website</a> for information on the range of activities and services that we provide.<br />
<br />
We encourage all members to renew their membership and support this organisation with the appropriate membership contribution via the link on the <a href="http://www.architectsforpeace.org/members.php#fee">Arch-Peace website</a>. Contributions are only required for members from OECD countries (listed below).<br />

<br />
Back from the holiday break and our team is full of energy to begin another year of reaching out, informing, critically learning and discussing architecture, public space, urbanism and all related fields. <br />
<br />
As usual, our next newsletter is coming soon and we would like to invite you all to become active members by sharing your local urban news with all of us. <br />
<br />
Contributions can be in the form of a visual diary. For example, a building that you like or dislike. Remember to include a few sentences to tell us what makes it interesting. It can also be a review or an article on a related topic—you choose. The best way to send your material to us is by writing a ‘note’ (Facebook notes) on you own wall and sending us the link or tagging us, we will contact you then. One important requirement is that ALL written and/or photographic material must be yours—<i>not copied from anywhere else</i>, unless it is a “quote” and a reference is included. <br />
<br />
You comments on our news and editorial are most important. Comments assist to generate dialogue, spark curiosity and we can all learn about what makes your city/town an amazing place.<br />
<b><br />
So, welcome to another arch-peace year and looking forward to your contributions!!!</b><br />

Thanks to all those who have commented, added photographs, discussed a point of view, presented at <a href="http://www.architectsforpeace.org/seminars.php">words@bld50</a> and posted links or articles. We have received news and contributions from and about: Rwanda, Prishtina, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Palestine, Chile, Australia, the US, Tunisia, Bangladesh among other cities and places from around the world. It is contributions such as these—of work that matters to the wider society—that makes arch-peace a great organisation and encourage us (volunteers) to continue.<br /><br />Thanks also to our Iranian colleagues who responded to our note of support, we hope with you for brighter days.<br /><br />Note that all our <a href="http://www.architectsforpeace.org/seminars.php">words’ presentations</a> are now available on video <a href="http://vimeo.com/archpeace">here</a>. <br /><br />Anything that we do here in Melbourne can be replicated anywhere else. Five million Iraqis have been uprooted by conflict, forced to leave everything behind. They have sought refuge within Iraq, Syria, Jordan and other neighboring countries. They are running out of resources with little opportunity for employment; access to food, heath care, education and other essential services is extremely limited. The conditions for Iraqis to return home safely do not exist, and millions of Iraqi refugees are unlikely and unwilling to return to Iraq in the foreseeable future. The U.S. administration must lead international efforts to meet the long-term needs of displaced Iraqis. Failure to assist Iraqis will have dramatic impacts on security inside Iraq.<br /><br />Refugees International has launched a <a href="http://www.refugeesinternational.org/iraq">new campaign</a> urging President Obama to do more to help Iraqi refugees.<br />The campaign features a petition urging the Obama administration to:<br /><blockquote>1. Assist Iraqi refugees.<br />2. Ensure a safe, voluntary return home when possible.<br />3. Pressure Iraq to meet its responsibilities to its own people.<br />4. Increase resettlement for those who can't go home</blockquote><span style="font-weight: bold;">Find more:</span> <a href="http://www.refugeesinternational.org/iraq-release">http://www.refugeesinternational.org/iraq-release</a>Beatriz Maturanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06476527926692961102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302402914752602329.post-89227211606337708542009-01-22T06:47:00.000-08:002009-01-23T18:09:24.006-08:00Gaza's desperate needs<span style="font-weight: bold;">Please consider: <span style="font-size:130%;">GAZA’S DESPERATE NEEDS</span> – What is really happening on the ground</span><br /><ul><li>CARE assessment: 89% of respondents in Gaza say they have received no humanitarian assistance.</li></ul><ul><li>Displaced people: 56% of respondents say they are hosting displaced people. Here we have described some steps that you may want to take in order to start.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>1.</strong></span> We suggest you to start a blog, similar to this one with a name that reflects your region, for example "arch-peace Colombia". To do this click here: <a href="http://www.blogger.com/create-blog.g">http://www.blogger.com/create-blog.g</a> <br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">2.</span></strong> You can then start posting (in your own language) and invite your friends/colleagues to join arch-peace (<a href="http://www.architectsforpeace.org/register.php">http://www.architectsforpeace.org/register.php</a>) and to contribute to your blog.<br /><br /><span style="color:#ff0000;"><strong>3.</strong></span> Once the blog is up and running, send us an email with the blog address and we will connect from the main arch-peace news to your arch-peace regional/country blog.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">4.</span></strong> An important ambition of arch-peace is to bring, share and learn from work produced in every country and not just from work done by richer nations or by 'hero' architects. We are looking from 'real world' projects.<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">5.</span></strong> By 'projects' we mean architectural/planning/landscape/engineering/public art projects or news. We also mean work and this may not necessarily be a project. For example, it may be a workshop, an architectural/planning... course, students' projects, or a neighbourhood project...<br /><br /><strong><span style="color:#ff0000;">6.</span></strong> If you have questions or some experiences that you would like to share, please write them as a comment to this post so we can all share/learn from them.<br /><br /><em><strong>Looking forward to read from all our regional/country representatives.</strong></em><br /><br />All the best,<br /><br />The <a href="http://www.architectsforpeace.org/team.php">arch-peace team</a>Beatriz Maturanahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06476527926692961102noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6302402914752602329.post-63847190508779167812008-10-18T23:41:00.000-07:002008-10-19T00:34:25.416-07:00call for pro bono services<strong>WE ARE CALLING FOR PRO BONO SERVICES</strong><br />SHAC's request:<br />We require a feasibility study and costing for renovation of the site which is in line with the aims and principles of SHAC (including shower facilities, a back exit, solar power, a sprinkler system, hard-wired smoke detectors etc). <br />
<b>TEXT:</b> Paste your <u>un-formatted</u> text using the "HTML" tab (above) and edit your post in the "Compose" tab (spaces, bold, italics, quotes and superscript). When published, un-formatted text will automatically become 'verdana' 10pt--this is the <u>default font face</u> used in our pages. Please <i>avoid</i> copying and pasting (on 'compose' mode) from a doc/docx document.<br />
<br />
<b>LABELS:</b> Please don't forget to <u>label</u> your post (please use existing labels, unless it is <i>absolutely</i> necessary to create a new one). Use the 'article' label <u>only</u> when the text is (by length, content and style) more than a post. Here the list of labels:<br />
<a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/adaptive%20reuse">adaptive reuse</a> <span dir="ltr">(1)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/announcements">announcements</a> <span dir="ltr">(19)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/architects">architects</a> <span dir="ltr">(6)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/architecture">architecture</a> <span dir="ltr">(18)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/articles">articles</a> <span dir="ltr">(36)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/campaigns">campaigns</a> <span dir="ltr">(22)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/cities%2Fcountries">cities/countries</a> <span dir="ltr">(30)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/commentary">commentary</a> <span dir="ltr">(3)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/culture">culture</a> <span dir="ltr">(17)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/design">design</a> <span dir="ltr">(5)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/development">development</a> <span dir="ltr">(10)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/discussions">discussions</a> <span dir="ltr">(7)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/ecology">ecology</a> <span dir="ltr">(11)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/education">education</a> <span dir="ltr">(18)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/essay%20%28students%29">essay (students)</a> <span dir="ltr">(2)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/events">events</a> <span dir="ltr">(25)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/fundraising">fundraising</a> <span dir="ltr">(3)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/housing">housing</a> <span dir="ltr">(11)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/interviews">interviews</a> <span dir="ltr">(7)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/man-made-disasters">man-made-disasters</a> <span dir="ltr">(12)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/memorials">memorials</a> <span dir="ltr">(3)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/occupation">occupation</a> <span dir="ltr">(5)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/peace">peace</a> <span dir="ltr">(7)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/planning">planning</a> <span dir="ltr">(13)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/poverty">poverty</a> <span dir="ltr">(6)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/professions">professions</a> <span dir="ltr">(6)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/profile">profile</a> <span dir="ltr">(8)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/projects">projects</a> <span dir="ltr">(13)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/publications">publications</a> <span dir="ltr">(2)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/reconstruction">reconstruction</a> <span dir="ltr">(18)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/reports">reports</a> <span dir="ltr">(2)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/reviews">reviews</a> <span dir="ltr">(7)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/statements">statements</a> <span dir="ltr">(4)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/transport">transport</a> <span dir="ltr">(6)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/urban">urban</a> <span dir="ltr">(15)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/visual%20essay">visual essay</a> <span dir="ltr">(1)</span> <a dir="ltr" href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/search/label/volunteer-positions">volunteer-positions</a> <span dir="ltr">(1) </span><a href="http://archpeace-events.blogspot.com/">EVENTS + COMPETITIONS</a><br />

<b>JUMP BREAK (read more):</b> Place your first image before or just below the first paragraph (if long) or the first 2 paragraphs (if these are very short).<br />
<u>Place a break</u> in the post somewhere below the first image and/or below one or two paragraphs (<a href="http://archpeace.blogspot.com/">see other posts for guidance</a>). The break is the broken page icon (see image) on the blog menu above, this will automatically create a "read more" text in your post.<br />
<br />
<b>AUTHORSHIP:</b> Don't forget to write the name of the author and note any link to the original source (if the article has been sourced from somewhere else, with prior permission). <br />
